More than Conquerors - #3 of 4

April 18th, 2011

Speaker: Jim Book

HOPE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT
Romans 5.5

Jesus makes his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, prophesied by Zechariah himself some 500 years before (Zechariah 9.9-10)

WHY DIDN'T THEY SEE JESUS FOR WHO HE WAS

  1. They had their view of Jesus eclipsed by their hardened hearts

    1. Paul recognizes the same crisis taking place in the city of Rome (Romans 1.20-25)

    2. Don't suppress the truth when it revolves around the ministry and message of Jesus (Romans 1.18)

  2. Jesus weeps over the city that refused to accept his message of deliverance

    1. The Greek word used here means to "wail and sob"

    2. While they were saying, "Hosanna! Hosanna!" He was hearing, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

    3. When Jesus looks at me what does he really see?

    4. Romans 5.19 - "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man's disobedience many will be made righteous."

  3. If they had only known the things that made for their peace

    1. "IF ..." that word always carries with it a sad, troubling contemplation

    2. This was a parade in their honor

    3. Jesus' immediate thoughts were not on his own gruesome death, but rather on the destruction of this once great city.

More than Conquerors - #2 of 4

April 13th, 2011

Speaker: Jim Book

MORE THAN CONQUERORS
Romans 8.26-31

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Paul Compares the Christian Life to ... A MILITARY CAMPAIGN ... A FOOT RACE ... A FARMER

We have assurance of total and complete victory
  • We shall win the battle
  • We shall cross the finish line
  • We shall prevail in our spiritual encounter with Satan
  • We are more than conquerors through Him that loves us

  1. We Are Helped by the Pleadings of the Holy Spirit

    1. One of the greatest gifts the child of God has at his disposal is the Holy Spirit

      1. Paul says: "We know not how to pray as we ought"
      2. Luke 11.1 - "Lord, teach us to pray"

    2. The Spirit helps us

      1. He knows our needs better than we know them
      2. He knows the will of the Father
      3. He is aware of our tremendous struggles and crushing heartaches
      4. He assists us in being "more than conquerors"

  2. We Are Kept by the Providence of God

    1. Romans 8.28

      1. We know ... the assurance of His providential care
      2. All things ... the scope of His providential care
      3. Work together ... the duration of His providential care
      4. For good ... the purpose of His providential care
      5. To those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose ... the objects of His providential care

    2. How can I know that God has a plan for me?

      1. The entire plan of salvation was laid out in the mind of God before time began
      2. This group of believers God foreknew would accept His message He predetermined should be conformed to the image of His Son

    3. Paul asks the thought-provoking question ... "if God be for us, who can be against us?"

The Living Sacrifice Sermon Series #4 of 4

March 27th, 2011

Speaker: Jim Book

The Living Sacrifice
Leviticus 20.7-8

“ Consecrate yourselves and be holy; because I am the Lord your God. Keep my degrees and follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy.” (Leviticus 20.7-8)

THE PENTATEUCH CONTAINS FOUR GREAT COLLECTIONS OF THE LAW

Ten Commandments ... a policy of categorical law

Covenant Code ... covers how particular legal issues are to be handled

Holiness Code ... provides the motivational foundation for all that God asks of his people both then and now

Deuteronomic Code ... these laws are an amplification of the Sinai laws for a new generation

  1. Consecrate and Be Holy

    1. The holiness code was a reflection of God’s holiness and nature

    2. Every negative law that God pronounced had a positive law attached to it

      1. Leviticus 19.4
      2. 1 Peter 2.9
      3. Deuteronomy 26.16-19: God told the physical nation of Israel that they were his people

    3. Be Holy Because I Am the Lord Your God

      1. God becomes the standard for holiness

        1. 1 Samuel 2.2-3
        2. 1 Peter 1.15-16
        3. Deuteronomy 26.16-19: God told the physical nation of Israel that they were his people

      2. God sanctified the nation of Israel with peculiar privileges, laws and favors

    4. Keep My Decrees and Laws

      1. Why? Because holiness is rewarded by sweet communion with God

      2. Why? Because we have confidence and our faith provides us with boldness

      3. Why? Because we have a hope that does not disappoint

      4. Why? Because this is how I make myself presentable to God
